CHAPTER 10

Dani helped Monica finished the large birthday cake she had to get done for tomorrow. Monica’s talent for decorating was second to none.

“Is this person a wolf lover?” Dani asked glancing at the large wolf Monica had hand painted on top of the cake.

“You could say that.” Monica chuckled. “This cake is for Mac. He’s a wolf Shifter, actually he is King of the Shifters.”

“A wolf Shifter?” Dani said then nodded. “Fits. I can see that.” She had met a few Shifters, but Mac being King of the Shifters was pretty cool.

“Me and Thorne are panther Shifters.” Monica rolled her shoulders after she put the finishing touches on the cake. “And Butch is Mac’s cousin.”

“He’s a wolf Shifter?” Dani said then grinned when Monica nodded. “So that’s what Bruce meant when he called him wolfman.”

“Bruce is something else.” Monica chuckled with a shake of her head. “Okay, help me get this cake into my van. I’m going to go ahead and drop it off at Zelda and Mac’s for the party tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” Dani frowned. “At Zelda’s?”

“Yeah.” Monica said absently. “The bakery will be closed all day. It’s a big event around here. Everyone will be at the party.”

“Monica.” Dani frowned knowing there was no way she could stay at Zelda’s. She had been debating on not going at all since Zelda left.

“Yeah?” Monica looked up at her. “What’s wrong?”

“Can I stay here tonight?” Dani asked with a frown. “I can’t stay with Zelda if the whole town is going to be there tomorrow. Plus, I’ve been hesitant about it because I saw how uncomfortable Mac was around me. I don’t want to ruin his day.”

“Shame on her for doing this to you.” Monica said instead of answering. “What kind of person would do this to a friend?”

Dani didn’t really know how to answer that, so she remained silent on that subject. “I promise to do some work around here, whatever you need.”

“Dani, I don’t care if you stay here, but where would you sleep?” Monica frowned.

“I don’t sleep much.” Dani grinned with a shrug. “But if you don’t want me to, I understand.”

“Want you to do what?” Butch walked in looking up from his phone staring first at Monica and then Dani.

“She wants to stay here instead of Zelda’s.” Monica blurted with a frown. “I mean I don’t care, but there wouldn’t be anywhere for her to sleep.”

“No.” Butch shook his head.

“Um, I wasn’t asking you.” Dani informed him. “Listen I appreciate what everyone is doing, but I don’t feel comfortable staying with Zelda.”

“Why?” Butch crossed his arms as he continued to stare at her.

“Because I don’t.” Dani said, then realized she didn’t sound appreciative. “Listen, I have my reasons.”

“Which are?” Butch wasn’t giving in.

“You know I could snap my fingers right now and disappear.” Dani cocked her eyebrow at him.

He actually grinned at her attitude then cocked his own eyebrow. “I’d find you.”

Dani snorted at that, but then realized he was dead serious. “I’m a big girl and I’ve been taking care of myself for a long time.
